Review of PCPNDT Act in the offing

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao on Monday said that he had asked for review of Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, that is in place to prevent female foeticide even as introduction of mobile scanning units and availability of medicines in pharmacies to terminate pregnancies up to 24 weeks have emerged to be challenging.

Speaking in the Legislative Council, he said that three persons have received ₹1 lakh prize for providing information on violation of this law, and that 70 cases were in courts, while in 80 cases fines had been levied. The FIRs have been lodged against three doctors and five nurses. He also said that the registration of pregnant women that were being done at 12 weeks was now being done at 10 weeks.
