What started as a peaceful disengagement meeting soon turned into a deadly hand-to-hand combat using stones, iron rods, and nail-studded clubs—since both sides had agreed not to use firearms at the LAC. 20 Indian soldiers, including Col. B. Santosh Babu, were martyred, and more than 40 Chinese soldiers were reportedly killed (though China officially confirmed only 4).
