Indian 2 Review: A Disappointing Sequel Despite High Expectations
Indian 2 (Bharateeyudu 2) was one of the most anticipated films of 2024, bringing together the iconic Kamal Haasan and director Shankar for the sequel to their 1996 blockbuster Indian (Bharateeyudu). However, despite the hype and high expectations, the film unfortunately falls short in several areas, leading to a lukewarm reception both critically and commercially.
What Worked
The film does have some redeeming qualities. Kamal Haasan, as expected, delivers a powerful performance, reprising his role as Senapathy with the same intensity that made the original so memorable. The supporting cast, including Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, SJ Suryah, and Bobby Simha, also give commendable performances, adding depth to their characters.
The visuals and production design are top-notch, showcasing Shankar’s signature style of grand, larger-than-life sets and action sequences. Anirudh Ravichander’s music score adds energy to the film, with a few tracks standing out as memorable.
Where It Fell Short
Despite these strengths, Indian 2 struggles with its storytelling. The narrative feels disjointed, lacking the coherence and impact that made the original a classic. The film’s pacing is uneven, with several scenes dragging on, which detracts from the overall experience.
The screenplay, which was expected to be the film’s strongest suit, fails to engage the audience, with the plot often meandering and lacking the tightness necessary for a compelling thriller. The social message, which was a defining feature of the original, feels forced and does not resonate as strongly in this sequel.
Final Verdict
Indian 2 is a film that had all the right ingredients for success—an iconic actor, a visionary director, and a strong supporting cast. However, the execution leaves much to be desired, making it a disappointing follow-up to the 1996 classic. While it may still appeal to die-hard fans of Kamal Haasan and Shankar, the film overall does not live up to its predecessor’s legacy.
