Laapataa Ladies Box Office Success on a Limited Budget
Kiran Rao’s directorial comeback film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ became the talk of the town ever since its release. Made on a limited budget of just Rs 4 crore, the film grossed a whopping Rs 21 crore at the box office.
Controversy Surrounding the Film’s Story
However, the film was also surrounded by some controversies. Filmmaker Anant Mahadevan had claimed that the story of ‘Laapataa Ladies’ was taken from his 1999 film ‘Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol’. In an interview, Mahadevan claimed that many scenes in the film were inspired from his film including the swapping of two brides.
Comparison with “Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol”
He said, “I have seen ‘Laapata Ladies’, and the beginning as well as many of the endings are similar. In our film, a city boy goes to the village for his wedding. The mess happens at the railway station when he asks his new bride, who is veiled, to wait for him on a bench. When he returns, he goes to the wrong bride…”
Director’s Allegations and Missing Film Evidence
However, the story of ‘Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol’ was quite different from ‘Laapata Ladies’. While ‘Laapata Ladies’ ended on a progressive note with two women finding the true direction of their lives, ‘Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol’ had two women falling in love with their ‘husbands’.
A Complex Legacy: Inspiration vs. Originality
The director had alleged that the film was available on YouTube till recently, but it mysteriously disappeared. He had said, “I have no proof that the writer of ‘Missing Ladies’ has seen my film on YouTube. When I searched for my film on YouTube, it had disappeared and only then did I realise it had been taken down. I did not approach Aamir (producer) or Kiran because they would only point out the differences. But the premise of the story, the situations and many scenes are similar. The mess in the train and the railway station, and the veiled photo are straight from my film. I will take it as a compliment, nothing more.”
